The Principles of DEIB are as valid today as before the last election, whatever the outcome, but overcoming mischaracterizations and misperceptions about those principles continues to be a major barrier to them becoming part of the soul of U.S. society. Whatever their agenda, opponents of DEIB have been very effective in controlling the narrative.
DEIB is on the defensive, and there is a great deal of negative messaging. This is fortified by reports of organizations scaling back or discontinuing DEIB programs. The 2024 election results have further emboldened opponents.
To even begin to talk with someone about DEIB, one must spend time trying to reframe their perception of DEIB as a topic and objective. Ask them what they think DEIB is (seek first to understand) and then explain that it isn’t all about race, gender, CRT, affirmative action, or however else it’s been falsely described. It’s about humanity and fairness.
Like it or not, DEIB needs more effective messaging, both to overcome misconceptions and to demonstrate how DEIB Principles are central to making good on the American Promise.
